DefectiveByDesign.org: iPad is iBad for Freedom
DefectiveByDesign.org è il nome della nuova campagna avviata dalla Free Software Foundation, contro l'utilizzo del DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) da parte di alcune delle più grosse aziende produttrici di Hardware e Software.

Il 27 Gennaio 2010, la Apple Computer annuncia ufficialmente il nuovo dispositivo tablet iPad e con esso una introduzione del DRM che non ha precedenti. Il DRM proposto dalla Apple potrebbe porre evidenti restrizioni all'utilizzatore finale, quali la possibilità di scaricare e installare sul proprio dispositivo, tutti i software che siano esterni all'Application Store ufficiale e verrà regolamentato l'utilizzo delle canzoni, dei film scaricati e di altri file multimediali, impedendone la loro condivisione.
DefectiveByDesign.org sta raccogliendo più firme possibili per la propria petizione e chiedere direttamente a Steve Jobs (CEO della Apple Inc.) di abolire l'uso del DRM in tutti i dispositivi Apple. La petizione è raggiungibile a questo link: iPad DRM endangers our rights.
Di seguito riporto esattamente la richiesta della petizione:
Durante le prime 24 ore dall'iniziativa, sono state raccolte circa 5000 firme e già inviate a Cupertino, dove si trova il quartier generale della Apple Computer. La petizione è ancora aperta e tanti altri stanno firmando.
Scrivo questo breve blog per invitare tutti gli utenti di questa Comunità a sottoscrivere la petizione.

DRM will give Apple and their corporate partners the power to disable features, block competing products (especially free software) censor news, and even delete books, videos, or news stories from users' computers without notice-- using the device's "always on" network connection.
This past year, we have seen how human rights and democracy protestors can have the technology they use turned against them. By making a computer where every application is under total, centralized control, Apple is endangering freedom to increase profits.
Apple can say they will not abuse this power, but their record of App Store rejections and removals gives us no reason to trust them. The iPad's unprecedented use of DRM to control all capabilities of a general purpose computer is a dangerous step backward for computing and for media distribution. We demand that Apple remove all DRM from its devices."
